Happiness Is

Happiness is stored in how someone smiles.

Either little grins or big bright smiles that make your cheeks hurt. In how his eyes squint when he grins and the way the smile splits her face into a look of joy. There is something so pure about how someone smiles when they are being so genuine.

The Christians

The Friday night before Thanksgiving break, my friend Taylor and I sat in Sanderson 215

excited to watch The Christians by Lucas Hnath — Covenant Theatre’s second live performance

of the year. The show was directed by theatre professor Camille Hallstrom and included an

incredible cast of Covenant students and a gospel choir led by James Ward.

Mac Movie

On Friday, November 12, students from all over campus congregated in the Chapel, all dressed to the nines, to witness the results of over a month of hard work from the residents of Maclellan and Rymer Hall: Mac Movie. As the countdown got close to zero and students walked down the red carpet lined isles, a buzz of anticipation filled the room. The building excitement erupted as the countdown ended and Maclellan president, Jacob Morosco, stepped on stage.

Mac Miller’s New Release

Mac Miller has been giving us new music for the past three years since his untimely passing. He died from an accidental overdose on September 7, 2018. There was a mix of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol in his system. His death came as a shock to many people as he was only 26. Miller, on his 2015 album, GO:OD AM, raps in his song “Brand Name” about how he does not want to join the 27 club which is a group of artists who passed away at the young age of 27. Miller’s untimely death shows us that we lost a creative person in his prime.

The Importance of Interludes

Everything in life is set in a context; we don't wake up each morning in a void. In fact, we're never in a void. The way you approach broccoli in the Great Hall is affected by your previous encounters and how others have spoken about it. Choosing to watch the stars from the overlook on your first date risks being spotted by nosey hallmates (physical context), but Mr. T's might've been the beginning of the end of your last relationship (relational context). God created us to be in context to be shaped by our circumstances — and He created it well.

Thinktober About Inktober

Started as a challenge mostly for himself, Jake Parker announced he would ink a new piece every day, calling it Inktober. Parker published his list of one-word prompts and invited those following his blog to join. The rules were simple. First, draw with ink. Second, post it. Third, tag it #inktober. And fourth, continue this until October 31st.

A Comedy of Errors

Last week, Covenant’s Theatre department made its return to live performances with the delightful romantic comedy She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith. Two of our seniors led the show for their capstones; Cara Smole (’22) as the director, and Emily Cothran (‘22) as the leading lady, Kate Hardcastle. Smole stepped in at the last minute to fill in for an actor who had to drop out of the show. Unsurprisingly, she took up the challenge and did an amazing job. Students, family, faculty, and community members who gathered at The Overlook were charmed by the comedy of the show and the talent of the cast.

Broadway: Back and Better Than Ever

Over the past year and a half, COVID-19 has affected every aspect of our daily lives. New York City was a place that was heavily affected by the pandemic. There were many places there that shut down, which had a major impact on the city as a whole. Leading up to this, there was no way for anyone to predict the impact that COVID would have on businesses.

Arts and Economics

In grade school, I remember having lots of good answers to this question — vacations, acquired skills, new experiences; but somewhere between high school and college, the question began to put me on the defensive. That’s because I realized that what it really meant was; “did you get a job? Were you making money and thereby contributing to society and being a responsible grown up?”

As the Winds Change, So Do We

It starts with the wind changing.

Hot summer air turns to cool autumn breezes that chill the temperature just enough to let one consider bringing out all their sweaters and sweatshirts and every collection of colorful scarves, lulling a passerby into believing it will stay cool enough for them to wear the layers all day.

HIStory

Newest leaves unfurling,

Eden her blessings bestowing,

Here a fig, there a berry,

But one treasure to carry.

The Tree of Life by name,

But man shunned its frame

The Tree of Knowledge to crave

God’s glory, but man met the grave.

The Karen Slack Concert

Most of Monday, Sept. 20, belonged to the rain and fog. The walk to my classes, holding a broken umbrella above my head, had set me in a decidedly uncreative frame of mind. I wanted nothing more than to sit in my room for the rest of the day. However, my music professor required a concert attendance as part of our grade, so I went to see Karen Slack and Casey Robards perform in the chapel at 7 pm. The concert lasted about an hour, and by the end, I had nearly forgotten about the rain and drudgery outside. While I am not a music or art major, the concert nonetheless touched and challenged me in ways I could not have predicted.
