Mac Miller has been giving us new music for the past three years since his untimely passing. He died from an accidental overdose on September 7, 2018. There was a mix of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol in his system. His death came as a shock to many people as he was only 26. Miller, on his 2015 album, GO:OD AM, raps in his song “Brand Name” about how he does not want to join the 27 club which is a group of artists who passed away at the young age of 27. Miller’s untimely death shows us that we lost a creative person in his prime.
On October 15, 2021, his 2014 mixtape Faces was released on all digital platforms. Faces was originally released on May 11, 2014.
“It’s not exactly the fork in the road moment of Mac’s career — that would be 2013’s Watching Movies with the Sound Off, the ambitious, acclaimed second studio album that helped redefine Mac as a serious artist,” Grant Rindner, writer for GQ magazine, said. “But Faces was Mac fully coming into his own as an all-around musician, opening up about mortality, love, and drugs with real candor, while exploring fresh sonic territory.”
This mixtape allowed Mac to be able to talk about the exciting and tumultuous parts of his life at the time. The Vulture talks about the album and the thoughts that go through the listeners head as they are listening.
“In a swirl of jazz, Mac begins by proclaiming that he should have died already, establishing Faces as a confession. He’s getting higher than we’ve previously heard about, celebrating his success with a variety of drugs while documenting the difficult descents from riding so high. Mac vacillates between emotional peaks but his rapping is at its best. In the storm of this mixtape, he never lets us forget that, at the time, he is just a 22-year-old guy trying to get his mind right. As listeners, there’s a natural concern for Malcolm, but there’s also a natural attraction to such brink-of-life music.”
Miller has a way of drawing people into his lyrics.
He talks about hard topics and the struggles he went through and he helps people that are going through the same struggles. Miller has always been an inspiration to so many people. He has been a person that many have looked up to and been able to help.
With Faces being released on all streaming platforms, Miller fans rejoiced. It is great to be able to hear his songs without trouble.
