With the arrival of the spring semester and the first full week down, so too comes the arrival of the Covenant baseball team’s spring season. While they had training camp last fall – filled with practices and scrimmages against each other – the spring season is what those on the team are waiting for. During this season, you can either use your opportunities to advance deep into the playoffs and play to your potential or lose that at bat.
However, some players, like David Lovell ’27, believe that this year's team “is capable of doing something special this year.” Lovell, who is coming back from a nagging shoulder injury, said he deeply looks forward to what this baseball season can offer, not for himself, but for the whole team.
To have a strong season and make a deep run, Lovell said that it is up to them to “decide if they really want it this year.” Isaac Leicht ’27 added that they need to “work towards putting together the talent as a team, taking on – and winning – double-headers, and defeating higher ranked teams.”
Led by the likes of upperclassmen Bryce Bollinger ’25, Zeke Gilbert ’25 and Scotty Smith ’25, this year's roster is also filled with “a talented freshman class, with a couple that will be real studs,” according to Leight. Speaking of the freshman, Leight said that he “looks forward to meshing with the freshman, especially the pitchers and catchers.”
Marcus Kinch ’27, along with Leight, pointed out how much more knowledge and experience you gain as a sophomore compared to being a freshman. Because of that experience, Leight sees an opportunity to help the freshmen navigate the ropes.
In addition, this year's team is being coached by two new assistant coaches, and in terms of the bullpen, Leight reported that there is a “great dynamic” within all of them, where they “trust and build off each other.”
While Lovell, Leight and Kinch all identified different things to what will ultimately give them success this season, they all look forward to the challenge together and repeatedly said that it is going to be a fun season – a season which will only be more fun if the Covenant student body shows their support at games! So if you are looking to be a loud voice and support these Scots, then mark your calendar for Valentine’s day – their first matchup against Greenville University!
