Lady Scots Basketball season has kicked off with many new experiences, including a new coaching staff and an unexpected trip to Alaska for a pay-to-play tournament over Thanksgiving break.
The North Star Invitational Tournament was hosted in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Lady Scots faced Multnomah University and University of Alaska Fairbanks. Senior Karis Macintosh was named to the All-Tournament Team. Macintosh has received the honor of Collegiate Conference of the South Player of the Week as well.
Although they lost both games, the Alaska trip checked off bucket list items for several of the Lady Scots. “My favorite part about the trip was seeing the northern lights,” said junior Abby Witt. “I have always dreamed of seeing them, and it was such an amazing experience!”
Witt said that while she was sad to miss Thanksgiving with her family, she was glad she got to spend time with her teammates. “We were able to love each other like family and be there for one another,” she said.
Covenant womens basketball has had some tough seasons in years past, but they look forward to a better one for 2023-2024. This year, the CCS preseason poll ranked the Lady Scots fifth out of five teams. The varsity record is currently at one win and four losses. The JV team played their first game on Wednesday, November 29.
“Even though we are only a few games into our season, we have grown so much as a team,” said Witt. The Lady Scots are working hard to improve their offense and defense that Witt says “gives each player the opportunity to score in a way that best fits their skill set.” Witt is excited to play the rest of the season with her teammates she affectionately recognizes as her best friends.
As with the rest of Scots Athletics, the womens basketball team needs the support of the student section at games. Be sure to head down to Barnes Gym on game days to cheer on your Lady Scots Womens basketball team!
