Lady Scots Update

Between the Covenant Volleyball Team and the Women’s Soccer Team, Covenant fans have a lot to cheer for these days. The Volleyball team clinched first in the USA South Conference, and the Women’s Soccer Team found a place in the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) rankings for the first time in the Division III history of the program.

Get ready, because Covenant will host the USA South Tournament Quarterfinals for volleyball and women’s soccer, giving the Scots a chance to show off their school spirit.

After sweeping Rhodes, Oglethorpe, and Maryville, Covenant Volleyball lost to Piedmont, but came back with a win against Huntingdon. Their overall record is 16-12, but more importantly, their conference record is 10-3. Now ranked as the No. 1 seed out of the West in the USA South Tournament, this season harkens back to last season in which the team won the conference title. Despite a valiant effort, the team lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament last fall.

This year, as Scots volleyball prepares to face Agnes Scott on October 26th and Wesleyan and Sewanee on the 29th, they will be looking for one more victory in order to guarantee the USA South title again. Covenant will be hosting the Quarterfinal on Nov. 1st, and hopes for a win this time around.

It is hard to imagine a stronger team than the one Coach Ehman, Coach Newman, and Coach Steph have put together. The talented line-up includes Ginny Moore, named USA South Player of the Week once this season, Morgan Opgenorth, who has come up with big blocks all year, Hannah Stewart who repeatedly collects digs, Schuyler Moore with impressive passes and assists, and Jessica Seehorn with countless kills. The team is set up well to succeed in this year’s tournament.

While Covenant Volleyball is dominating the court, the Women’s Soccer Team continues to find victory on the pitch. Previous to the recent losses to Piedmont and Salem, the team was on a seven game winning streak. The team had six straight shutouts during that streak, showcasing their powerhouse offense and a defense that has set them up to win a championship.

Despite falling to Salem, (the new USA South West Division champion), Covenant was the only team to defeat Salem this season, having done it on Sep. 17 at home.

Overall Lady Scots Soccer is 13-4, and out of 14 conference games they have won 11. This earned them the No. 2 seed from the West in the USA South Tournament. Notably, the team won all eight home games, and now that the regular season is over, the Lady Scots will prepare for the USA South Tournament. On October 29, Covenant will host the Quarterfinal to kick off the tournament, playing the winner of the Piedmont and Huntingdon match.

This season, we have witnessed stunning performances from freshman Anna Robertson, sophomore Callie Bader, junior Rebekah Gravitt, senior Anna Porch and many others. Rachel Lemay (the sophomore goalkeeper) has had an impressive season and Kaitlyn Winking (senior) was just named USA South Defensive Player of the Week. The stacked team proved their talent throughout this season and fought hard for their ranking.

All in all, both teams are experiencing exciting seasons, and are keeping hopes high for the upcoming tournaments. All eyes are on the Lady Scots in their final pushes towards victory.
