The Case of NFL Fans vs. the State

In February, the 59th Super Bowl took place between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, making waves among Americans in the home and all over social media. One moment that went particularly viral was when Taylor Swift, attending in support of Travis Kelce, was shown on the jumbotron only to be booed by the surrounding crowd.

Since Swift and Kelce’s relationship went public, Swift’s presence at football games has become a thorn in the side of many National Football League (NFL) fans. She is booed and criticised for being in attendance, with her fans also being mocked as “bandwagon” fans as their interest in the NFL has grown.

This same negative energy has not seemed to be found from Swift’s fans. In general, this overlap between two vastly different entertainment groups with excitement and positivity. While Swift is met with boos and harassment, Kelce was met with cheers and generosity when he attended the Eras Tour, especially when Swift brought him on stage one night to be involved in her show.

So, why the difference?

It does not seem to be that NFL fans are just against all celebrities at games. Just at the Super Bowl alone this year, celebrities like Pete Davidson, Paul Rudd and Anne Hathaway were all in attendance without any issue from the audience. So, why does Swift bother fans of the NFL so deeply?

It seems to me that Swift’s fanbase, while often problematic in their responses to negativity towards Swift, has seen this integration of the two different worlds as a positive place for connection. Now, there is a place of contact between partners, dads, brothers, and friends that didn’t exist before. Swift's fans have found an avenue that has caused interest in the football world, with videos going viral on X of daughters connecting with their dads over Swift’s connection to football.

On the other hand, the NFL fans seem to be particularly protective of their space, not wanting Swift and her fans to enter into it due to their appeared frivolity. Swift is criticized for her focus on romantic experiences in her music, and her fans are often seen as shallow and obsessive, which is not always an unfair statement. However, it is arguable that many NFL fans show an equal amount of obsession with their favorite teams, which could be shown in reactions like the destruction in Philadelphia after the Eagles secured their Super Bowl win.

Regardless of both fan experiences on their own, the female fans of Swift seem far more accepting of the genuine excitement that comes with being a fan. NFL fans appear to have categorized their investment in their team as acceptable, while Swift and her fans are an irritation for being invested in Swift and her career. The masculine world of the NFL seems unwilling to join together with what is generally considered a feminine interest, regardless of how it is bringing two worlds together.
