Welcome to the Opinions section! Tucked away in the back of each edition, it's full of diverse and exciting content. In its conversation starters, interviews and perspectives there is a world of information for YOU to navigate as both readers and writers.
Opinions can be contentious or controversial, but my vision for this year is for us to navigate them with a heart of wisdom. In the words of the Apostle Paul:
So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. (Romans 14:16-19)
People can disagree on many things, and opinions can divide even the most spiritually focused communities. But if committed to the gospel of peace, sharing opinions (even in a little school publication) needs to come from a heart of gentleness, seeking what is best for our brothers and sisters in Christ.
I hope this is a year full of submissions that are bold, diverse and exciting. As section editor, I will not turn away writing that I disagree with, but I will hold any piece to a high standard in its motivation and approach to issues. Do your homework! Interview people (maybe even some who disagree with you)! If the article’s subject is someone you’re mad at, talk to them first!
My hope is that this section will produce good discussion, new perspectives and thoughtful discourse on issues readers may not have considered. If you have ideas or writing you want published, don’t hesitate to send it, and if you see a piece that inspires you, send a response. I look forward to reading what you have to say!
