Students returning to Covenant next fall should expect to be greeted with several new tech changes. Covenant students, faculty, and staff will be switched from Scotsmail with Outlook to Google Apps for Education, and will adopt Canvas as a learning management system. Tech Services plans to work through the summer to make the smooth tech transition, and hope to complete the move by mid-July.

On Tuesday, March 31, Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students Brad Voyles sent out an email with the subject line “Mandatory Meal Plans.” His email, the validation of months of whispered rumors, announced a new mandatory meal plan system that will be implemented beginning in the 2015-2016 school year.

Planet Narnia
On Monday, Covenant welcomed Dr. Michael Ward, an apologist and leading expert on the life and works of C.S. Lewis, to chapel and special afternoon lecture. The author of four books, including Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis, Ward’s greatest claim to fame is his appearance in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, in which he can be seen holding a pair of X-ray spectacles next to Pierce Brosnan’s Bond.

Evening gowns, monk robes, and red gnome hats—all proper attire for Founders Music Video Night, Founders Hall’s annual celebration of building creativity. Despite Friday’s snow and ice storm, students from all over campus showed up to see the assortment of music videos by Founders halls, each introduced by seniors and former Founders residents Seth Mayberry and Stephen McKerihan, quirky and colorful hosts who entertained the audience with their on-stage stunts, jokes about animal terrorism, and cardboard robot.

Andrew Peterson, Covenant’s musical guest at the 2014 Neal Conference, appearing for the first time since performing for the 2009 Neal Conference, is back at Covenant this semester, not just to sing at Scholarship Weekend chapel, but to teach a creative writing class for the English department. Both an accomplished musician and author, Peterson is the 2015 Nick Barker Writer in Residence, a position he is well qualified for as the award-winning author of The Wingfeather Saga, a ten album musical artist, and the founder of Nashville’s Rabbit Room creative community.

Slider’s Pizza has arrived to fill the pizza-shaped void in the hearts of Lookout Mountain residents. No longer are Covenant students forced to depend solely on Mr. T’s delivery service to sate pizza-hungry appetites. Located on Scenic Highway less than ten minutes south of Covenant’s main campus, Slider’s Pizza (“Handmade from Scratch”) is locally owned and operated by the Slider family and, according to the Facebook page, “wants to fix the pizza dilemma on our mountain.” Whether or not Slider’s will be able to adequately answer the demands of Covenant’s pizza-loving student body remains to be seen.

Enoch Elwell, cofounder of The Company Lab, and Andrew Alms, who has a background in land and organizational development, are part of the team heading up the project designed to be an imaginative and eco-friendly “glamping” (glamorous camping) experience.

After almost twenty years at Covenant, Troy Duble has decided to step down from his role as vice president for advancement. Duble, who graduated from Covenant in 1993 with a degree in business administration, acted as director of development prior to becoming vice president for advancement in 2005. Duble cites “a strong call to pursue new ventures” as a reason for his departure.

This summer Covenant officially announced the cancellation of plans for a Covenant branch campus in Indonesia. In an email sent on July 3, President Halvorson informed all faculty and staff that Covenant would no longer be pursuing “the establishment of a branch campus of Covenant College in Indonesia.”
