What is Student Leadership?

With the end of the Fall Semester comes cold weather, the flu, finals, and student leadership. Student Senate had their first set of elections on Nov. 19 and now Student Development has begun to advertise for all of the other leadership positions. These positions are the Core Team, O Team, CAB, Senate, Multicultural Leaders, and Student Ministry Coordinators.

These are opportunities for students to not only help guide the direction of Covenant, but also to serve the campus as a whole. “I enjoy having events and I know how much they mean to me. I wanted to be able to provide the same thing for others as well as have a role in shaping these events” said Jonathan Bozarth, an RA and a member of CAB.

For those who may be concerned about the time commitment, each position has a different level of responsibility and time. For example, being an O Team Leader requires a lot of time and work during O Week and a little into the beginning of the semester, but has very little time commitment during the school year.

However, there may be some that want to serve throughout the school year, and do not choose O Team or Core Team. The other options then are Senate, RA, CAB, Student Ministry, and Multicultural. Each of these serve the campus in different ways. CAB and Senate are two of the biggest event organizing bodies on Campus, although Senate is also a major decision making body on campus.

Student Ministry and the Multicultural leaders in many ways exist for the soul of campus. “The role of a student ministry coordinator is to encourage and facilitate spiritual development and programming within the residence hall” and “The role of a student multicultural leader is to create a welcoming campus environment which provides spiritual, emotional, and practical assistance for students in a cultural, racial, or ethnic minority at Covenant” according to the 2021- 2022 student handbook.

One of the benefits of being a part of leadership at Covenant is the mentorship and the care that Covenant puts into growing leaders. “Once you get in that role, a lot of times they are more interested in helping you through the role rather than your exact performance” according to Bozarth.

Not only is being a part of Covenant’s leadership team a great way to serve campus, but it also allows for a lot of individual growth. “ I want someone else to get that same opportunity and training because I think they’re going to get more out of it,” said Bozarth.

Even if a student is not completely sure if a leadership role is right for them, Bozarth encourages them to at least talk to someone. “They are pretty careful in making sure that people are a good fit for roles. They are not going to put you in a role that you are well equipped to do” reassures Bozarth.

On top of that, being a leader gives a student great opportunities to “get experience and direction for an after-college ‘little-c-calling,’ and students would be wise to take advantage of that,” said Bozarth.
