On October 9 and 10, over 400 Covenant alumni and friends will return to the mountain to celebrate their time at the College and reunite with former classmates. Homecoming weekend this year features some fresh events alongside all our favorite traditions. Look forward to a buzzing Carter Lobby, a chilly fireworks show, and some especially good dining. Certainly don’t expect to find a seat in Chapel on Friday.
New leadership in the Office of Alumni Engagement is looking to animate longstanding traditions this year. Kim Collins, recently appointed director, says she hopes that “students, faculty and staff will enjoy taking part in all the festivities along with fellow Scots from past generations," and is excited for a “full and fun” two days.
The weekend will begin with the announcement of Alumnus of the Year and Young Alumnus recipients in Chapel, as well as a celebration of God’s faithfulness to our school. Throughout the day alumni will tour campus, distract professors, and sit in on some of their favorite classes. Make the most of this opportunity to meet former Covenant students (cough cough, garner prank ideas). Seriously though, we have some people from the early days coming into town: the classes of 1965 and 1975 will be celebrating their 40th and 50th reunions over lunch on Friday. If you get to interact with these alumni, please leave the conversation with at least one good story. Don’t miss the chance to hear from two different panels of professionals hosted by the Center for Calling and Career that afternoon in Brock Hall, either.
Friday night features The Savannah Disputation in Sanderson, followed by a classic event: Jazz on the Overlook. Hors d’oeuvres, a big band, dancing, twinkly lights above and below. That makes for an October evening.
The next morning, students and alumni will run in the Highland 5k, with pancakes to follow. Saturday includes soccer, baseball, and volleyball games, a fireside chat with President Halvorson for alumni, and—in case you can’t get enough school—the Inaugural Homecoming Faculty Lecture series featuring Dr. Nola Stephens and Dr. Jay Green.
Before the Men’s Varsity team laces up to take on Methodist University, the intramural field will host Chattanooga food trucks (rumor has it Grilled Cheese Emergency will make an appearance) and some fun activities for kids. Yes, for children of alumni. During that time the classes of 2015, 2010, 2005, and 1990 will gather, as will alumni of Second South for their inaugural Homecoming mixer (don’t forget your boat shoes). Of course, the weekend will close with another W on the Scots’ record and fireworks.
Bring blankets. Bring your outside voice. Bring some Scots Pride. We have quite an institution to celebrate.
All students, faculty and staff are invited to take part in all the festivities along with fellow Scots from past generations. If you’d like to participate in the Highland Run or to attend career panels, or to purchase a Homecoming 2015 shirt, please register at covenant.edu/homecoming, where you may also see the full schedule of events and an updated list of registered guests (your grandparents might be surprising you).
