On Sunday, February 4, 2024, Joel Belz, a former professor and board member at Covenant, passed away at the age of 82. His story is an inspiring one for both Covenant College and the wider Evangelical Christian community. His legacy and efforts to champion the Gospel are significant, so here are some of the elements of his story as we remember him.
Imagine the dreamlike tones of a social media influencer: “GRWM to be paid $0 an hour to go to the worst parts of your city, and get yelled at by strangers for trying to help.”
“LISAN AL GAIB! LISAN AL GAIB!”
In the chapel this past Inauguration day, students chanted loudly as Brad Voyles took up his weapon to engage in ritual combat against Derek Halverson to earn the office of president. Voyles saluted with his blade: “May thy knife chip and shatter” before the attack—
On Friday, March 8, 2024, Too Close to Touch released the most anticipated album of the last few years for the Metal and Hardcore scene. It was the first release from the lauded Kentucky hardcore group since 2020 when they released the four-volume series of EPs entitled “I’m Hard to Love, But So Are You,” and also serves as the band’s final goodbye to music, and to their beloved frontman Keaton Pierce, who died of pancreatitis in 2022. The album entitled “For Keeps” had been in the works since before Pierce’s death but had to be put on hold after his sudden death. The title of the album is a play on one of Pierce’s nicknames, based on his initials KP.
As of sundown on Sunday, March 10, the official Islamic holy month of Ramadan began for Muslims in the West. It will last until Tuesday, April 9. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is considered holy by the nearly two billion Muslims worldwide because it is the month during which, according to Islamic belief, Muhammad first received revelation from God in 610 AD.
“Are Covenant College Students Actually Behaving Like Christians?” was written in the last issue of The Bagpipe and, to me, was a mixed bag of ideas and promptings. On one hand, I agreed with the author's charges at the end of the article that we as Christians should seek to love God more and more. That’s kind of the whole point right? God sacrificed himself in the form of Jesus to save us so we could be reconciled to him. We have great freedom in this! Our sins are forgiven (awesome), we always have someone with us (super comforting), and a means to understand the world (clarifying). We also have freedom though to figure out what being a Christian and a human being looks like.

Over spring break, eight of us varsity basketball players, along with three managers, five of our dads, and Coach Brown, went to the Dominican Republic on a mission trip with Score International. Before going on this trip, we truly had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.
On Wednesday, March 6, during Spring Break, 6 a.m. alarms blared in our ears, a literal rude awakening from the relaxation of the previous couple days. After trudging through a muddy yet productive workout, we scarfed down some cereal and piled into three vans, excited for our trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Scots Tennis had a wonderful time in Texas. I feel like we really bonded together and grew closer as a team. We spent our first night in Waco and the next four in Austin, where we spent most of our time.
